Mellon hands EMEA brief to comms chief Brookes

Mellon Financial Corporation has promoted Mellon International communications manager Jamie Brookes to oversee comms in the EMEA region.

The fund manager is planning to expand into continental Europe.

Brookes has replaced Jan Altink as head of corporate affairs and reports to Boston-based Mellon International director of corporate affairs Rose Gabbianelli.

Based in London, Brookes will take control of Mellon International's internal and external comms activities and will oversee its five agencies in Europe.  Mellon's UK PR is handled in-house.

Brookes joined Mellon four years ago from Legg Mason Investments, where he was head of communications. He has led Mellon's PR strategy to increase awareness of its asset management business outside of North America, promoting Newton Investment Management to wholesale and institutional investors. Altink, who has left Mellon, could not be reached for comment.

Mellon Financial is the world's 12th largest asset manager. The firm announced last September that it would buy half of the asset management business of WestLB through a joint venture with the German Landesbank.

Mellon is believed to have trumped US fund managers Legg Mason and Nuveen with the deal, the value of which was estimated to be about £68m.
