Gender pay gap must be tackled properly

I was shocked at the extent to which, according to CIPR research, women are underpaid and men under-represented in PR ('PR in numbers - the state of the nation,' 11 November).

Too many within the industry dismiss this as a peripheral issue that could be solved if women were more assertive in salary negotiations. I actually heard an industry leader say as much at the CIPR conference last week.

Equal Opportunities Commission research shows pay gaps are caused by an outdated workplace, not a lack of assertiveness from staff.

We must take a look at ourselves as an industry - not simply tell women they should ask for more money.
