NGOs must beware of too much crying wolf

How right Kate Nicholas was in her column, 'NGO accountability - who's keeping watch?' ( 28 October).

I am constantly amazed by the collective ability of NGOs to predict the end of the world without anybody noticing that it regularly fails to happen.

Doubtless one day it will, but until then NGOs remain aided and abetted by a media mindset that relishes such predictions, while suffering no apparent impact on their credibility.

I take no joy in the criticism. In reaching for the headline, there's often the hand of a PR adviser. But it is imperative that NGOs enjoy the soundest of reputations in their invaluable role as watchdogs to the political and business worlds.

The danger of barking all the time is that sooner or later, nobody bothers to see what you are barking about.
