Amgen hires Sorman to grow comms in UK

Amgen, the world's biggest biotech firm, is radically beefing up its corporate comms, having brought in Anna Sorman to fill a newly created top UK PR job.

Sorman left pharma giant Sanofi-Aventis, where she was head of brand policy and public affairs, in May and has joined Amgen as UK director of corporate affairs, it emerged this week.

She is now building what she described as a 'new department as a natural development of the growth and influence' of the firm, whose headquarters are based in the US.

In the Cambridge-based role she reports to UK general manager Ken Keller and European V-P of corporate affairs Jon Spear.

Sorman said her 12-strong team aims to 'support improvements in patient care, especially helping to ensure all patients who could benefit from Amgen's medicines are able to receive them'.

Sorman's role in the combined Sanofi-Aventis UK comms set-up, created after the 2004 merger of Aventis and Sanofi-Synthelabo, had only been publicly confirmed three months prior to her exit. At the former Aventis, Sorman was policy and public affairs head.

Amgen this month confirmed the appointment of Phyllis Pianoas as vice-president of corporate communications and philanthropy in California.
