2 Minutes with ... Dave Woods Editor, PokerPlayer

Before it hits the shops on 22 September, tell us where the idea for PokerPlayer came from.

There's been a massive explosion in interest in poker over the last two years - especially in the last year, where UK player numbers have doubled - and we felt it was time to produce a mainstream poker magazine.

Has anyone else had the same idea?

No, not yet. The only poker magazines around at the moment are aimed at the professional end of the market and tend to bombard the reader with stats and technical info.

Whereas you will ...

Take poker to the streets! Our ethos is to teach people to enjoy the game and play better poker within their means. PokerPlayer will look and feel more like a men's lifestyle mag, with news and interviews sitting alongside pieces on strategy. Our USP is the action section, where readers can play against professionals and get their game rated. We'll also be taking a mobile table into cities (starting with London's Oxford St) and challenging people to take us on.

Who are your readers going to be?

Our broad readership is 18 to 40-year-old males, but we won't be going down the 'lad mag' editorial route, as many women play poker too. The internet has been a great leveller, and has taken poker out of the rather intimidating environment of the casino.

Give us an idea of the things you're going to run in the first issue?

We've got a guide to the World Series of Poker Tournament, a light-hearted look at poker on TV and a poker-orientated tourist guide to Las Vegas.

The travel angle is something we'll be using in future issues too.

What do you want to hear about from PROs?

Poker is quite an anarchic and irreverent world, and we aim to reflect that. Send us things that will make us laugh or help us to educate the reader.
