The move follows the surprise departure of Edelman joint CEO and healthcare director Nigel Breakwell (PRWeek, 17 June).
Kan will join on 3 October and lead the 35-strong combined pharma PR and BioScience Communications medical education teams, reporting to Stuart Smith, now sole UK chief executive.
Kan stepped down as H&K UK healthcare MD earlier this year (PRWeek, 25 February). The move follows a decision to relocate to France. But he is now to return to London, to take up what he called 'a more challenging, more career-focused job'.
Kan's brief is to grow business with existing clients and win new business, working with European health MD and EV-P Kate Triggs, international business director Carolyn Paul, who co-ordinates Edelman's US, Asian and European offices, and New York-based global healthcare president Nancy Turett.
'A number of clients are shared across networks,' said Kan, who has also worked at Burson-Marsteller. 'There is a best practice team working across (those networks), and it will involve working with them to build the healthcare practice globally.'
Kan will not hold the separate role of joint CEO relinquished by Breakwell.
'He will support me in managing the London business, though,' said Smith.
