PN scoops 3Com Europe account

3Com, the internet router and IT security firm, has hired Porter Novelli to manage its European comms.

PN has scooped a contract to co-ordinate PR across the UK and EMEA after a five-way pitch (PRWeek, 15 July) which included five-year UK incumbent agency Spark Marketing Communications.

The appointment is also a boon for PN's affiliate agencies in the region, which will pick up 16 separate country-based accounts. PN's combined budget is worth more than £500,000.

3Com is understood to be keen to promote its credentials in IT security as a leader in the secure converged network market as a result of its acquisition of IT protection firm Tipping Point earlier this year.

Last month Tipping Point announced its Zero Day Initiative, under which 3Com will pay researchers to spot problems in systems and software. 3Com will use the information to provide early protection to its customers.
