Opinion: My Best Hire - Gordon Marsden MP

Terry Franklin, International Public Relations Partners chairman, on 'high-flier' Gordon Marsden MP.

'I was managing director of Hill & Knowlton in the early 1980s and we were desperate to find more PROs with the brain power to devise solutions to satisfy the most demanding CEO.

'At Gordon's first interview, I knew that we had found someone who was willing to forsake his life in academia for the cut and thrust of PR.

With his dry wit and incredible powers of reasoning, he set the standard.

'Gordon was always in demand, whatever the assignment, and could run circles around everyone, including demanding CEOs.

'After a distinguished career in PR, Gordon turned to journalism and became the editor of History Today, where he spent 12 years.'

Gordon Marsden is now the Labour MP for Blackpool South.
