Public Sector: Solihull in sports comms initiative

Solihull Council is offering a free PR service to community sports bodies in an attempt to encourage more residents to take up exercise.

The council claims its Newslink service is the first of its kind in the country.

Newslink will issue news releases, arrange press photography and provide media training for club officials and representatives.

It is operated separately from the council's in-house comms team.

'Small community-based sports providers do not have the skills to promote themselves,' said council service development manager for marketing David Whitehouse. 'People do not get involved in fitness classes because they do not know what is on their doorsteps.'
