Three-fifths of its 250,000 staff benefited from an optional scheme which offers staff a percentage of their salary in Tesco shares, which can be cashed in after three years or taken as dividend. A team leader or a shop-floor worker on £13,000 got around £4,000 in what The Sun described as 'Britain's biggest ever staff bonus'. Amid growing public concern over stratospheric supermarket profits, this should help stave off further criticism - at least for a while.
