The charity, which provides funds and volunteers for more than 140 environmental research projects in 50 countries, wants to raise awareness about its work.
Bhangoo, formerly a freelance PRO based in Canada, said the charity's profile was 'strong in travel and tourism press' but the organisation needed to be more proactive when it came to national and trade titles.
'We work with a lot of scientists and that message is missing,' she added. 'We're here to help people find solutions for a sustainable environment.'
Bhangoo's appointment follows the exit of Earthwatch head of European comms Susie Duncan at the end of this week.
The charity is seeking her replacement and has compiled a shortlist of applicants. Until a replacement is found, Bhangoo will report to director of programme operations Eve Carpenter.
Bhangoo will spread the charity's media targets to include CSR publications, science magazines and environmental and business press. Her responsibilities include European and UK media relations.
She replaces Natalie Pritchard, who left seven months ago to join Turner Broadcasting (PRWeek, 23 July).
The role of European PR manager has been expanded since Pritchard's departure to include more focus on corporate partner recruitment and education initiatives.
