Charlie Burgess, associate editor at The Guardian, is to become managing editor of The Independent and The Independent on Sunday. He replaces Jan Thompson, who is to become managing editor at The Observer.

Zeena Moolla, features editor of the Daily Mirror's Saturday TV supplement We Love Telly!, has been appointed deputy editor of fortnightly All About Soap. She joined this week, taking the place of Jonathon Hughes, who was promoted to editor at the beginning of the year.

New regular features in Hachette Filipacchi UK's relaunched teen magazine Sugar include The Month - a celebrity and fashion section - and boy-themed LadMag. The editor is Annabel Brog.

A monthly glossy, House & Home Ideas, is launching next month. Aimed predominantly at women, the Giraffe Media title covers products and design for the home, from interiors to kitchen gadgets. The editorial director is Kevin Whitchurch.

The BBC's long-running astronomy programme The Sky At Night is to have its first spin-off magazine. Bristol-based Origin Publishing is set to launch the eponymous title in May, and editorial will include contributions from Patrick Moore. The managing editor is Paul Parsons.

Mark Huband has been appointed defence and aerospace reporter at the Financial Times. Previously security correspondent, his remit includes aviation, defence, aeronautics and security.

Men's style magazine GQ is rolling out a dedicated grooming section in its May issue. Jodie Harrison, who joined the title last year, will edit the section. The magazine's editor is Dylan Jones.

Contract publisher Mediamark is taking over publication of horse magazine Equine Express for specialist insurer Petplan Equine. The biannual title, which is sent to all Petplan customers, was formerly produced in-house.

Editorial will focus on horse care as well as eventing. The editor is Justine Thompson.

BROADCAST

Former Daily Mirror editor Piers Morgan is to front an early-evening chatshow for the BBC. Provisionally called First Edition, the programme is set to go out in summer in the 6.30pm slot. Morgan has recently co-hosted Channel 4's Morgan & Platell.

Laurie Upshon, controller of news at ITV Central for more than a decade, is to quit in the summer. He is not thought to have a job to go to. Upshon joined the broadcaster from TVS as editor of Birmingham's Central News programme in 1985.

Future Publishing is launching a website for its movie magazine Total Film later this year. Matt Mueller, editor of the print title for the past six years, has been moved to the newly created role of editor-at-large. The Bath-based publisher is recruiting his replacement and an online editor.

The BBC is to launch a local TV news service in Birmingham, Coventry, Worcestershire, Staffordshire and Shropshire in September. The West Midlands trial will distribute TV news over broadband internet, digital satellite and mobile phones. Pat Loughrey is BBC director of nations and regions.

Teletext Holidays is providing editorial content for The Sun Online's travel guides. The agreement is part of a deal that will see Teletext's holiday offers incorporated into the travel pages of The Sun newspaper. Teletext travel editor is Tina Banerjee.

Weekly celebrity and gossip magazine Now is to provide clothing editorial for online fashion retailer ASOS.com. Now fashion director Karen Buglass will provide advice on the site and in email newsletters sent to ASOS.com customers.
