Healthcare: Eisai steps up search for European chief

Japanese drug maker Eisai is bolstering its European PR clout by hiring its first in-house comms boss. The appointee will promote both its corporate reputation and its products across the Continent.

Eisai, the firm behind brands such as ulcer treatment Pariet and Alzheimer's drug Aricept, has already sounded out UK-based PROs about taking the newly created post. It wants to fill the role 'as soon as possible'.

Eisai's previous corporate comms efforts in Europe have been handled by individuals seconded to London from its global headquarters in Tokyo.

The role has been created to help promote the company's ongoing European expansion plans and its activities in relation to issues such as corporate social responsibility, a spokesman said.

The role will be based in Eisai's offices in Hammersmith, West London, which house both Eisai's European management and support functions and Eisai UK - the sales and marketing operation for the UK. The spokesman said the role was 'mainly corporate' but would also include product comms.

Prescription drugs account for most of Eisai's sales and are led by Aricept - one of the four Alzheimer's treatments criticised as not costeffective by NICE last week (see At a Glance).
