LGA lobbies for clean-up funding

Local government leaders are lobbying ministers to support future environmental powers with extra funds and a national anti-litter campaign.

The Government’s proposed powers are outlined in the Clean Neighbourhoods Consultation and include tools to crack down on fly-tippers, fly-posting and abandoned vehicles.

The Local Government Association wants the Government to draw up a national anti-litter campaign and encourage the public to do their bit to care for the environment.

It made the call in its submission to the consultation that ended on 24 September, but will back it up with an ongoing lobbying push.

At the centre of its submission is a call for ministers to clarify how the powers will be funded, particularly in the start-up phase with new staff, training and systems putting a strain on budgets that ‘are already massively overstretched’.

The LGA is also lobbying for utility firms to remove damaged equipment such as street lamps and phone booths, and for supermarkets to pay for the disposal of abandoned trolleys.

LGA environmental board chair David Sparks welcomed the proposals, but said: ‘Councils are already facing a double-whammy of squeezed funding for environmental services and a host of national and EU waste targets.’

He warned that without extra funding for manpower and training, the drive will be put ‘at risk’.
