The ‘Race Against Time’ campaign aims to raise awareness that the infections are still a threat despite newer vaccines available and that the diseases can kill in hours.
‘We do have vaccines that give good protection against meningitis and septicaemia, but that doesn’t mean parents should be complacent,’ said Meningitis Research head of comms Julia Warren.
‘Once children have the vaccines they are protected, but only against certain strains of the disease. It’s good news that we have the vaccine, but it’s more a case that we’ve won the fight but not the war.’
The campaign will consist of a media awareness push and distribution of a leaflet to GPs across the UK. The leaflet emphasises that the earlier the infections can be treated, the less chance they will be fatal. It also gives crucial symptom details.
