Blakemore will have overall responsibility for the human rights group’s UK media relations.
He reports to campaigns director Stephen Bowen, leads a team of four and is expected to work on PR campaigns with current retained agency Borkowski PR.
He replaces Lesley Warner, who left to pursue a freelance PR career.
Amnesty International’s current projects include its Control Arms initiative, which aims to raise awareness about the impact of guns at home and overseas, and its Stop Violence Against Women campaign.
Other issues Blakemore will handle include the charity’s campaigns against torture and human rights abuse in Sudan, as well as its stance on the death penalty, corporate responsibility and refugee issues.
Amnesty has consistently made the top three in PRWeek’s NGO Watch monitor of media mentions every month since February.
