Council ratings tied to PR spend

There is a clear link between good local government ratings and comms spend, according to MORI director Ben Page, who spoke at the IPR Local Government Group conference last week.

Good Comprehensive Performance Assessment (CPA) ratings, given to local authorities by government watchdog the Audit Commission, are closely linked to how well councils communicate with residents, particularly about what they are charging for.

Page said: ‘If you keep people informed, you’re more likely to be perceived as providing value for money.’

But he acknowledged the problems councils have reported in using Royal Mail to send out regular newsletters to residents (PRWeek, 21 May). Trade group LG Comms is working to get a better deal for councils, and has teamed up with the Royal Mail to help it provide better services for local authorities sending out comms to all their residents.
