Diary: Let's do lunch - Obsidian Bar and Restaurant

If any PRWeek readers have been kept awake at night wondering what Sir Cliff Richard has been up to recently, then wonder no more. He has been busying himself with co-ownership of the Arora International Hotel in Manchester. Independent from but below the Arora is the Obsidian Bar and Restaurant.

This exceptionally smart basement restaurant had only been open a few days when I visited, so teething troubles were apparent. The food on offer, described by Obsidian as international with an edge, was far too rich and complex for a lunch date and would be more suited to an evening dining session. The simple lunchtime fare we wanted, such as the mushroom risotto, was off the menu.

However, the range of delicious desserts more than made up for any shortcomings and the chocolate tart, although extremely heavy, is to be recommended.

An extensive wine list was available and the exhaustive cocktail bar begged a second visit.

The gracious surroundings are superb but the service and the menu require additional polish. All in all, once Obsidian irons out its teething problems, it should be a great place for after-dinner cocktails and a superb place to take clients.
