Guide Dogs push to boost access

Guide Dogs is poised to begin a campaign to stamp out discrimination against guide-dog owners who are refused entry to services such as banks, hotels and restaurants.

The charity will launch ‘Open Your Doors’ during Guide Dog Week on 4-10 October, less than a week after the Disability Discrimination Act comes into force.

The campaign aims to inform pubs, shops and other businesses about their legal obligations under the act, which ensures that service providers must provide access to the disabled.

Research into attitudes of service providers towards guide-dog owners and the experiences of owners will be broken down regionally and nationally for relevant media, which will also be targeted with case studies.

Guide Dogs is also using the opportunity to try to improve understanding about the role of guide dogs and will offer companies advice on serving the blind.
