Abbey takeover propels Brunswick back to top

Brunswick reclaimed top spot in Deal Watch this month, courtesy of its role advising both parties in what could be Europe’s largest retail banking merger.

The agency, which has been retained by Abbey National Plc since 2000, was drafted in by Grupo Santander just before the Spanish bank announced its £8.5bn agreed takeover of the UK bank.

Finsbury and Tulchan Communications slipped a position in the table, taking second and third position respectively.

Finsbury is advising International Power on its £3bn acquisition of 13 Edison Mission Energy plants, while Marks & Spencer’s adviser Tulchan is advising it on the £763m sale of Retail Financial Services to HSBC.

There are four new entries to the top ten. Buchanan Communications is advising Alchemy Partners on its sale of Four Seasons Health Care to Allianz Capital Partners, while Bell Pottinger Corporate & Financial is advising ISIS Asset Management on its £862m bid for Foreign & Colonial Investment Trust.

Gainsborough Communications’s venture capitalist client Doughty Hanson is selling Dunlop Standard Aerospace Group design and manufacturing businesses to Meggitt for £408m, while College Hill’s client Laurel Pub Company is selling 432 pubs to Greene King.
