Smithfield’s Paul to head external affairs at CRE

The Commission for Racial Equality (CRE) has lined up Smithfield senior consultant Sandra Paul to head its external affairs.

Controversy has dogged the CRE’s media profile this year after the organisation reported Robert Kilroy-Silk to Scotland Yard for inciting racial hatred.

Chairman Trevor Phillips recently declared multiculturalism dead and called for British blacks and Muslims to live by the values of the nation’s white majority.

CRE director of comms Colleen Harris would not confirm the appointment, but it is understood that Paul is set to join on a part-time basis.

Harris said she plans to change the remit of the head of external affairs role, formerly held by Chris Myant, who left last November to become CRE director in Wales.

When the vacancy was publicised, Harris said she expected the new head to ‘get to grips with challenges like Islamophobia and racism towards immigrants’.
