Exel axes top PR role as Dawson leaves

FTSE 100 logistics company Exel is to scrap its most senior comms role following the departure of director of corporate affairs John Dawson.

Dawson is moving to chemicals giant ICI as vice-president of investor relations and corporate communications next month after four years as Exel’s highest-ranking PRO.

He said Exel had decided to split his IR and corporate PR responsibilities between former chief financial officer of technical and logistical freight management Duncan Magrath and head of group PR & marketing Rebecca Salt.

Salt will continue to work on financial and corporate PR while Magrath has taken on IR in the expanded role of director of IR and financial strategy.

Exel has retained The Maitland Consultancy for the last five years.

Dawson takes the ICI role following the departure of Richard James in April, who is now group treasurer of Cable & Wireless.

Dawson was appointed TI Group head of IR in 1997 after working for the firm since graduation as an accountant and finance director. He became Exel director of corporate affairs in 2000 following the creation of the company through the merger of Ocean Group and NFC that year.

Dawson said it would be premature for him to comment on his priorities at ICI but added: ‘My main focus has been to develop a strong IR strategy within the groups that I have worked for.’

ICI retains Brunswick for financial comms and Makinson Cowell for IR.
