Smith, who has worked as commercial director of Enterprise IG, MD at The Henley Centre and managing partner of Brunswick subsidiary Merchant, said he was tasked with ‘improving the performance of the [College Hill] business’.
He has not been given a formal title, but College Hill chairman Alex Sandberg said Smith’s appointment was about ‘spreading the load into further growth’.
Sandberg added that Smith’s position was similar to that of a managing partner in a law firm ‘where there is a senior partner and a managing partner with the latter running the business itself as well as client business’.
Smith’s role will straddle all of College Hill’s practice areas, which include financial and corporate PR, investor relations, M&A management, IPO support, crisis management, branding and design.
WPP chief executive Sir Martin Sorrell appointed Smith as commercial director of brand design agency Enterprise IG in 1991 before making him MD of WPP marketing company The Henley Centre in 1993.
Smith joined Brunswick subsidiary Merchant as managing partner before moving to Whitehead Mann as COO in 2000.
