Greenberg, who is the Standard’s most senior sports journalist as assistant editor – sport, has emerged as Chelsea’s favoured candidate for a newly created top comms role. Confirmation of the appointment is understood to be imminent.
Greenberg’s appointment completes a drawn-out recruitment search for which former Sun editor Stuart Higgins had an advisory role. The search kicked off soon after Peter Kenyon decided to quit Manchester United to join the Stamford Bridge outfit as CEO – a news story broken by the Evening Standard.
Greenberg will work alongside Kenyon in their attempt to raise the global profile of Chelsea, which has risen considerably since Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich took over the club last year.
Greenberg, who declined to comment but is understood to be a Tottenham Hotspur fan, joined the Standard two years ago from the News of the World.
