Pfizer hit by NA drugs opposition

ST PAUL, MN, and RICHMOND, VA: Drugs giant Pfizer has come under fire in North America over its stance on drug importation and counterfeit drugs.

Grassroots advocacy group the Minnesota Senior Federation (MSF) is leading a multi-state anti-Pfizer campaign because of its opposition to the re-importation of US-made drugs from Canada at cheaper prices.

Pfizer senior director of media relations Paul Fitzhenry said: ‘Legalising the importation of medicines from Canada is not the best solution to enhancing access to medicines for Americans.’

Meanwhile, the US Food and Drug Administration and the Virginia Pharmacists’ Association has launched a public information campaign to warn about the dangers of counterfeit drugs.

VPA director of policy James Pickral said the campaign was aimed not just at Canadian re-importation but ‘drugs from unregulated and unlicensed sources’, such as websites.
