Diary: Let's do Lunch

Choice - Reviewed by Brian Beech, managing director of Manchester's Euro RSCG Leedex

There may be trendier PR haunts in the city, but Choice is Manchester's best restaurant. It's not just me that thinks so - it was the Food and Drink Festival's Restaurant of the Year in 2003. But Choice somehow remains one of the city's best-kept secrets.

Intimate and discrete, but welcoming and warm, Choice is the ideal location for lunch with the potential client you don't want other consultancies to know you're talking to, or for dinner with the client contact who signs the cheques.

Choice prides itself on serving regional favourites in a different way.

Fish and chips: plaice fried in tempura batter, sweet potato chips and wasabi pea puree. Savoury Cheesecake: Mrs Kirkham's Lancashire cheesecake with peppered watermelon ice and roast vegetable salad. And mini Manchester puddings, Boddingtons ice cream, apple Eccles Cake, chocolate and walnut black pudding and Manchester tart.

No London prices are on the award-winning wine list, with house wine at £12 a bottle and Pouilly-Fume and Faustino V Rioja at under £20. A bottle of bubbly at under £30 is ideal to celebrate all those account wins. On the down side, the restaurant tends to run out of the favourite dishes if it's busy and the pianist does have a tendency to play the blues too often.
