Health Bill sparks Alliance action

The Mental Health Alliance is preparing mental health service users, carers, professionals and supporters for action before the imminent release of a revised draft of the Mental Health Bill.

An Alliance news update was sent to more than 20,000 supporters, promising a ‘menu for action’ once the draft Bill is published.

The Government’s update of the 1983 Mental Health Act includes prescribing an increase in compulsory treatments, which the Alliance argues will lead to a reduction in the right for treatment of people not deemed to come under the compulsory requirements.

‘We must be ready for further action,’ said Alliance chairman Paul Farmer, adding that there were plans to target local MPs en masse with co-ordinated visits to their offices, postcards and large-scale protests.
