Luton in Trading Standards push

Luton Borough Council has launched a campaign to raise awareness of Trading Standards among ethnic minority communities after it was revealed that authorities had little contact from those sections of the population.

Bollywood-style posters in English, Urdu, Gujarati and Bengali will be targeted at minority communities, which make up 20 per cent of the region’s population. The communications team has taken the posters on a roadshow to test response.

A council spokeswoman said: ‘Trading Standards identified that services are lacking in ethnic minority communities so we put together some notices and posters and took them to community groups to make sure the message truly hit home in their languages.

‘The response was fantastic. Everyone had a story to tell,’ she added.

Council officers also plan to tour communities to warn against unscrupulous traders and to advise on second-hand car purchasing.
