OPINION: MY BEST HIRE - Alan Edwards

Alan Edwards, chief executive of The Outside Organisation, on Kylie and Radiohead promoter Murray Chalmers

'My best hire was Murray Chalmers, now press director for Parlophone, responsible for Kylie and Radiohead among others.

'He joined us as a shy teenager from Dundee back in the 1980s, but had a natural aptitude for PR.

'Murray was diligent and quiet, but effective. He strategises on his feet, knows what journalists want and is pragmatic enough to know there has to be negotiation and compromise with the media. That's what PR is: one long negotiation.

'After a couple of years, EMI offered him a better deal, including a flash company car, drinks cabinet and all the rest. I was very sad to see him go. We've remained friends to this day.'

Murray Chalmers has been director of press at Parlophone Records for five years.
