NE lobby group to push assembly

The group campaigning to bring a regional assembly to the North East of England has outlined its action plan ahead of a referendum on the issue later this year.

According to Ross Forbes, director of Yes4TheNorthEast, the aim is to generate interest in devolved government before the referendum scheduled for October.

The campaign, which launches to a national audience this month, will be in two phases. The first, from now until June is to, ‘galvanise support’ among local people.

It includes a Valentine’s Day promotion, called Love Your Region, as well as a Saint’s Day event in March to argue the case that St Cuthbert should be the patron saint of the area.

Forbes said that, from June to October, a second stage will launch in which the campaign will ‘intensify’ and external PR support is expected to be brought on board.

Currently the campaign group is using public sector specialist DTW on a pro-bono basis.
