Head of communications Kate Pierce has decided to quit amid an ongoing staff ‘consultation’ that is likely to see around five core media relations staff from the 26-strong comms team devolved to directorates.
Pierce, who will leave at the beginning of January, said that while she backed the proposed restructure ‘100 per cent’, it was not a structure that she herself wanted to manage.
Pierce said the proposed re-structure was right for the council ‘at this time’ but that ‘it will only leave a fairly small central team, which for me personally will not leave the challenges I am looking for’.
Pierce, who joined from a role as deputy head of comms at the London Borough of Newham (PRWeek, 18 April), plans to freelance as a PRO.
Sara Williams, an adviser to the CEO to whom Pierce reports, said it was likely the council would ‘go out to tender for interim management’ for the comms team.
