Golf legend joins hip-joint supplier for PR offensive

KALAMAZOO, MI: Medical device manufacturer Stryker has launched a PR offensive to inform patients about joint diseases and the technologies available to treat them.

Golf legend Jack Nicklaus, who received a Stryker ceramic-on-ceramic hip in 1999 as part of a clinical trial (the product won FDA approval in February 2003) is acting as a campaign spokesman.

The promotional push – supported by Euro RSCG Middleberg – aims to boost hits on the firm’s website, strykerceramics.com, where patients can find a self-test for evaluating the severity of osteoarthritis (OA) symptoms and suggested questions to ask physicians.

According to Stryker orthopaedic division global comms director Jeff Ignaszak, most patients experiencing joint pain visit their primary-care physician.

However, he added: ‘Those doctors have not been targets for news about advancements in medical devices.’
