US pharma body hires former H&K man for V-P remit

Washington, DC: Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) has appointed Hill & Knowlton senior vice-president Ed Belkin as V-P of communications.

Belkin, who quit H&K last week, will report to PhRMA senior vice-president for comms and policy Richard Smith, when he assumes his new role on 11 August.

Belkin said his role was established as part of a PR restructure triggered by the resignation of the trade body’s former comms head Mark Merritt, who quit in April to become president and CEO of the Pharmaceutical Care Management Association.

Merritt’s post has since been abolished, with Smith, formerly head of policy, taking on more responsibilities.

Prior to joining H&K in 1995, Belkin was senior director of comms for ex-senator Dave Durenberger in Minnesota.
