Headhunter Whitehead Mann quizzed 130 senior communicators across the UK - alongside another 120 in the US - in a bid to identify the unique qualities of a model corporate comms director.
The research suggests every firm's fantasy PRO has a number of skills and qualities, including the ability to 'act as a counsellor to the leadership team and be seen by all to have good judgement in communications and business'.
He or she will also have 'operated on big platforms and faced big issues', alongside being able to 'support business objectives, while building and protecting the company's reputation'.
Whitehead Mann consultant and research author Jonathan Harper said: 'It's clear there's no one quality that makes an ideal corporate communications director candidate - it's an amalgamation of criteria.
'We are hoping the survey results can be used by CEOs or group human resources heads to use as a benchmark.'
He added that other vital corporate comms head qualities were openness, honesty and integrity, whereby a culture of openness is promoted and 'no key audiences are disenfranchised'.
