Woolworths holds strategic PR pitch

Retailer Woolworths is in talks with agencies about a strategic PR contract aimed at better aligning the firm's media coverage with its business goals.

The company's PR team has met two agencies and is set to meet further firms with a view to hiring in the coming months.

Comms head Nicole Lander said the hire would be in addition to firms already used: 'Woolies is getting more sophisticated and I'm looking at aligning our PR output with our business goals. We are looking at using another agency in a more strategic way.'

It is not known which agencies Lander has met but both are understood to have signed non-disclosure agreements.

'The brief we are talking about now is about strategic communications,' she added.

Other firms used by Woolworths include The Ideas Network, for consumer and product PR, Joe Public Relations for 'news generation', Tulchan Communications for financial PR and Golin Harris International to produce the staff magazine, Woolies News.

Woolworths was demerged from Kingfisher in 2001 and faced problems including a £200m debt pile. But the company received a fillip over the Christmas period in which like-for-like sales outperformed its rivals by growing 1.5 per cent on the 2001 figures.
