Honda holds pitch for motorsports

Motoring giant Honda is staging a pitch for PR support for its motorsport activities.

Honda UK head of corporate press and PR Paul Ormond said five agencies were in the frame, with meetings scheduled for 5 February.

The RED Consultancy, MPA and Jardines PR are in the running, alongside two specialist agencies, Motorcom and RBP.

Ormond said: 'We want to turn our racing machines into national news stories.'

Honda supplies engines to the British American Racing (BAR) Formula 1 team and races its Honda Civic in the British Touring Car Championship.

It also races motorbikes and supplies outboard motors to independent 130 and 225-horsepower off-shore powerboat teams.

Ormond said that in the past Honda had used various 'small agencies' to promote its motorsports interests, working closely with his seven-strong in-house team.

He added that main agency MPA would be retained to handle 'general consumer work on Honda's car activities', in addition to some Formula 1 work, regardless of whether it won the pitch.

'We think there may be a benefit in creating some cohesive PR direction on the motorsport side. We want to bring it all under one umbrella,' he said.
