PUBLIC SECT0R: Amicus hires firm to audit internal communications

The UK's second largest union, Amicus, has hired the Arnold Group to carry out a communications audit.

The project is due to be completed by the end of next month and has been called for following the change in leadership last summer when left-winger Derek Simpson replaced Sir Ken Jackson.

It is understood Simpson wants considerable improvements in the way leadership communicates with members.

Amicus was created in January last year by the merger of the Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union and the Manufacturing, Science and Finance Union.

An insider close to the four-way pitch process to handle the comms audit said: 'Derek sees the relationship between the general secretary and the membership as master and servant with him as the servant. That needs to be reflected in communications.'

The agency reports to Amicus communications director Richard O'Brien.
