FTSE places more emphasis on role of PR

Global index firm the FTSE Group has hired its first communications director to co-ordinate PR efforts, in line with the company's global expansion plans.

FTSE Group - which runs indices including the FTSE 100 - has named Marianne Huve-Allard as its chief communicator. She joins seven months after the departure of head of comms Helen Humphries, who left to join snack food firm United Biscuits as comms controller.

FTSE Group has since expanded the role, elevating the post to director of comms - a move which is seen to reflect the group's commitment to PR.

Huve-Allard - who formerly acted as Euronext's director of corporate comms, IR and operational marketing - said the role change followed a wider business rethink: 'There was a major strategic review and the group felt communications needed to play a more significant role.'

Huve-Allard takes charge of a team of four in the UK, with an additional PRO based in the group's New York office. She said they were considering hiring another PRO in the new year to cover Asia.

Huve-Allard's remit includes responsibility for media relations, internal comms, IR and public affairs.

The FTSE Group retains no external agency support in the UK, but has three consultancies on board in France, Spain and Germany.

'The idea is to rebuild a strong comms strategy for the FTSE Group more as a corporation than a product,' said Huve-Allard.

'The focus is also moving towards national global issues as the company develops worldwide, and we have some work to do in making FTSE more visible abroad as well as the UK,' she added.
