PUBLIC SECT0R: CAFCASS selects Byrne as its first head of comms

The Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service (CAFCASS) has named Cathy Byrne as its first head of comms.

Byrne joins the newly created body later this month from Edelman PR Worldwide, where she is an associate director of corporate and public affairs.

Her fast task will be to put in place a permanent team, including the hiring of a communications manager.

Initial PR work, already being carried out by an interim team led by consultant Maria Darby, will be to handle internal communications for the body's 2,000 advisers and liaise with legal groups.

However, Darby says the aim is to extend the PR capabilities to become a major voice for child welfare issues in the mainstream media.

CAFCASS was created last year to advise the courts on practice for dealing with sensitive issues involving children, including adoption, care and contested residency cases.
