MacLeod replaces Coleman in BP investor relations post

BP investor relations chief Greg Coleman has quit after 18 months to head the group's global health, safety and environment division.

He is to hand over the top IR role, which covers the US and UK, to award-winning oil analyst Fergus MacLeod next month.

The move comes six months after BP announced the appointment of Anji Hunter, Prime Minister Tony Blair's former adviser, as communications director, sitting alongside Coleman and V-P media Roddy Kennedy (PRWeek, 16 November 2001).

Coleman's promotion to group V-P health, safety and environment - a non-communications role - sees him take on global responsibility for that sector.

MacLeod will lead teams of seven in the UK and three in the US, reporting to group V-P of corporate communications Mark Ware.

BP director of IR for the UK and continental Europe Peter Hall said on MacLeod's role: 'The day-to-day job is to communicate with analysts, brokers and buy-side analysts, such as fund managers. The job entails communicating group strategy and performance to these audiences - there's also a role in briefing management and getting feedback from target audiences.'

MacLeod joins from private advisory firm Pure Research, where he was chairman. But he made his name as a buy-side analyst, firstly at Schroders Investment Management and then heading the former NatWest Securities, now part of Deutsche Bank, for ten years.

He led the group's global team of oil analysts and was named best UK financial analyst for six consecutive years by Extel.

BP hired Hunter - Blair's former director of government relations - last November, handing her the newly created role of communications director, overseeing web development, internal communications, corporate brand management and major publications.

BP has signed up David Beckham on a two-year deal for its Castrol products.
