James Drewer to head Maitland Political as Pete Bowyer departs

Maitland Political has appointed James Drewer to lead the agency as managing partner, among other changes in its senior leadership.

Drewer (pictured), the former Conservative Party press secretary who joined Maitland in 2010, replaces Pete Bowyer, co-founder of Maitland Political’s predecessor consultancy, who left last month.

Meanwhile, Julie Harris has been promoted to deputy managing partner of Maitland Political. She has been a partner at the agency for five years.

Senior consultant Isabella Gornall – formerly policy advisor to Conservative MP Zac Goldsmith – has been promoted to associate partner and head of Maitland Green, Maitland Political’s environmental and sustainability public affairs and PR practice.

Maitland Political was founded in 2011 following the merger of Havas agencies Maitland and Euro RSCG Apex. The latter was formed in 2006 by Ed Owen, former longstanding special adviser to Jack Straw, and Bowyer, former Weber Shandwick director and Labour Party press councillor.

Drewer told PRWeek that Maitland Political, which employs 10 consultants, shares around one third of its business with parent agency Maitland. About the same proportion is shared with other Havas agencies, and the remainder is carried out solely by Maitland Political.

Drewer said: "There is definitely a gap in the market for joined-up senior advisory support, particularly as we see the demise of Bell Pottinger. Over the coming months we'll be adding capabilities to our offer so we can provide best in class support in some exciting growth areas, such as industrial relations, energy and infrastructure."

He said Maitland has developed an "extremely powerful" AI product "to get much richer insights to inform our public affairs approach".

Maitland Political’s clients include Domino's Pizza Group, Flybe, Spire Healthcare Group, Thames Water Utilities, and The Climate Group.
