Arnold Palmer was a legendary golfer, but he also left behind a legacy as a product endorser that few have matched.

Arnold Palmer passed away at the age of 87 on Sunday, leaving behind a legacy as a sportsman and product pitchman that few have matched.

Often referred to as the father of sports marketing, Palmer capitalized on his everyman persona with decades-spanning partnerships with Pennzoil and Hertz and other deals that raked in millions.

At a time when TV was still a nascent platform, Palmer’s career off the course caught fire in 1960 when he started working with agent Mark McCormack, founder of talent agency IMG, which was eventually acquired by WME. Legend has it their business relationship began with just a handshake.
