Barua worked for the business lobby group for seven years, where she held a number of posts, including director of corporate communications, head of news and corporate comms officer.
Before the CBI, Barua was a media officer for the Royal College of Nursing. Earlier, she was a business journalist for nearly ten years with stints on the Liverpool Daily Post, as a producer at CNN and as a broadcast journalist for the BBC.
At Newington, Barua will lead the corporate affairs team and is tasked with spearheading the growth of this part of the business.
Barua will sit on the senior management team, working alongside chief executive Mark Glover and managing directors Phil Briscoe and Naomi Harris.
Glover said: "I’m delighted Muniya is joining us to lead the growth of our burgeoning corporate affairs offer. She brings a wealth of experience from her time at the CBI where she led its media, digital, sponsorship and marketing arms, as well as a background in print and broadcast journalism."
Barua takes over the role from Natasha Graham, who is leaving in October.
Barua said: "I’m delighted to be joining Newington as it enters its next exciting stage of growth. It’s a company with great people, strong values and clear ambition."
