One of the world's largest music entertainment groups, Universal properties include Abbey Road Studios, Decca, EMI, Polydor and several Universal-branded labels and companies.
Murtagh-Hopkins will be based in London and report to comms SVP Caryn Tomlinson, who is also in London.
He will work closely with UMG’s management team, labels and operating companies around the world in helping to communicate the company’s global business strategy.
He said: "The opportunity to join the world’s leading music company is a huge privilege. Not only is UMG one of the most revered and trusted brands in global entertainment, but it is also at the forefront of redefining the commercial opportunities available to its incredible roster of artists and businesses."
Currently, Murtagh-Hopkins is director of comms at UK Music, the umbrella group representing the collective interests of the country's music industry, working closely with industry and Government. Prior to this he worked at Sony Music and EMI Records, among others.
Universal recently hired a new digital strategy chief, and its CEO Lucian Grainge was knighted earlier this year.
