INTERNATIONAL: Ruder Finn lands gsk vaccine brief

SINGAPORE: GlaxoSmithKline (gsk) has given Ruder Finn a 12-month contract to handle a comms programme promoting its vaccine portfolio.

Last year, Ruder Finn worked on a campaign for gsk's hepatitis A vaccine, Havrix, but will now also handle Twinrix, a vaccine for hepatitis A and B; Varilrix, a vaccine for chicken pox and Infanrix, a combination vaccine for diptheria, tetanus and pertussis.

Ruder Finn won a pitch against several undisclosed consultancies for the work.

Ruder Finn's work will focus largely on an educational campaign to raise awareness of the importance of vaccines in preventing disease.

Media relations encompassing newspapers, health and beauty magazines and medical journals will target consumers and medical personnel.

Ruder Finn director of healthcare Caroline Mackie will head the account.

Ruder Finn Asia executive V-P Louise Harris said consolidating the account would help position gsk as the 'leader and powerhouse in vaccines'.

gsk's in-house PR team has this week been working on the tenth International Congress on Infectious Diseases 2002 at Raffles The Plaza from 11 to 14 March.

The pharma giant set up its first in-house PR division in China last October, hiring Edelman PR Worldwide to help develop the department and to build a corporate profile across the country (PRWeek, 12 October 2001).
