National BBQ Week fires up with campaign and video competition

UK consumers will be urged to clear the patio and dust down the BBQ from next Monday as National BBQ week returns for its 20th year.

The celebration, this year sponsored by Majestic Wine Warehouse, the beer Bombardier, sausage maker debbie&andrew’s, the book Fire & Smoke by Rich Harris and the pub chain Harvester, runs from 30 May to 5 June.

The week is created and owned by experiential and promotional agency Brand Belief, which has this year taken on the North East agency Get Brindled to deliver a four-week PR campaign.

It includes a campaign to ban the disposable BBQ, a video competition on social media with the punning title of the ‘Baptas’ and pop-up BBQ activities by ‘guerrilla grillers’ across London and the South East. The PR agency driving the week says it hopes to generate more than 150 pieces of coverage.

According to Get Brindled founder Antonia Brindle, the BBQ food and drink market has risen in value from £150m in 1997 to around £1.3bn this year.

The week will be followed by a 'Gastro Alfresco' campaign with 75 of the UK’s largest Sainsbury’s and Tesco stores visited by "talented teams of chefs and brand believers" who will encourage the UK to enjoy summer, a press release said.
