Tobacco giant PMI hires new comms chief amid agency hunt

Philip Morris International, a tobacco firm with 2014 revenues of $80bn (£56bn) and often cited as the second largest firm in its industry, has hired a new comms chief and is looking for a new PR agency.

US-listed Philip Morris International (PMI), which owns Marlboro among other international brands, hired Laure Thibaud as vice-president, comms, on Tuesday (1 March).

Marco Mariotti, PMI senior vice-president, corporate affairs, said: "We are delighted to welcome Laure, who brings a wealth of experience in global communications with a truly international career across a number of industries including healthcare and insurance. Her depth of experience will be a valuable addition to PMI."

Thibaud was previously senior vice-president, corporate comms, at pharma firm Sanofi Group, and has also worked at AXA and GSK, spending 17 years at the latter and rising to lead external affairs for Europe.

PRWeek has learned that PMI is today hearing pitches for a new PR brief, with several global networks understood to be seeking the brief. PMI declined to comment.
