APCO Worldwide has appointed Adam Welsh as managing director of the firm’s Singapore office.
Welsh returns to APCO following a stint in-house at Opower, where he was senior director of regulatory affairs for APAC.
Before that, Welsh was senior director at APCO based in Canberra, where he managed the agency’s clients and projects across the region in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Mongolia.
Welsh said the opportunity to return to APCO was too good to miss.
"I have never worked in Singapore before, I worked more in the outposts of APCO in the region, handling big projects. But I wanted to take on the management challenge of an APCO office."
Returning to the agency side has meant greater variety in terms of work, Welsh told PRWeek Asia, but having in-house comms experience will help him in his new role.
"It was interesting to see on the customer side the things that frustrate you," he said." You want [agency] people enabling you rather than pushing you in a certain way. That’s what I want to bring back to APCO."
APCO has a broad client base in Asia-Pacific, with a lot of work for governments in the region as well as multinationals entering various markets. Welsh said he is looking for the agency to do more work in Singapore and regionally.
"I’m very lucky, I have inherited a great team here. They know the region, we have satellite offices in key countries, so we have local expertise," he said.
"APCO does its best work when we’re able to give truly insightful and authentic counsel to senior clients; that’s our sweet spot. It allows us to bring together our strengths in advocacy and comms."
