Hicks started her role this week and succeeds Graham McWilliam, who has been promoted to deputy head of Sky News.
In her new role, Hicks leads Sky’s corporate, consumer and internal comms, events and its Bigger Picture social purpose teams - and will take up public affairs and policy later in the year. She reports to group CEO Jeremy Darroch and joins the company’s executive team.
Her appointment is the latest significant change at the broadcaster's senior comms team. Last summer PRWeek reported that Alice Macandrew had resigned as director of corporate comms at Sky, and then joined Thomas Cook in a new group comms role.
Macandrew's successor at Sky is Rowan Pearman, who joined in September from Diageo, where she also held the role of director of corporate comms.
Before retailer Gap, Hicks was a partner at Brunswick, where she worked for 13 years focusing on corporate and financial comms with consumer-facing companies.
Darroch said: "She has an exceptional track record of growing the reputation of global, consumer businesses. As Sky becomes a more international company Catherine will play a crucial role, and we look forward to benefiting from her broad experience and perspectives."
Hicks said: "The corporate affairs team at Sky is first class and I look forward to leading the team as we continue to build Sky’s position as Europe’s leading entertainment company."
