Edelman Australia has announced that Steven Spurr, COO of the firm's UK and Ireland operations, will become CEO in Australia effective March 1 2016.

Spurr has spent 17 years at Edelman across the firm’s New York, London and Sydney offices.

He replaces outgoing CEO Tim Riches, who has resigned with immediate effect to "pursue other opportunities", according to an Edelman statement.

Spurr has most recently been leading the technology, health, energy and science sector teams at Edelman UK and Ireland.

He has particular experience in the pharmaceutical market, and was previously managing director of Edelman’s health practice in the UK.

"Our Australian business delivers world-class work and has a leading bench of talent across Melbourne and Sydney," said Iain Twine, CEO, Edelman Southeast Asia and Australia.

"Steven’s return to the Australian team is fantastic news. He is a highly-respected figure across our network, exemplifies our culture and brings to the table a depth and breadth of experience for our clients."

Spurr is one of several senior changes at Edelman Australia. COO Matthew Gain will leave the firm in January to become head of operations for Australia and New Zealand at Audible, owned by Amazon.

Edelman has also hired Stuart Edwards as managing director in Australia, and Belinda Brett as general manager.

Edwards joins from Lowe Profero, where he was managing director, while Brett returns to Australia from the UK, where she was a board director at Talk PR.
